There will be more replicants among us in the future, this time on the small screen. According to Deadline, Amazon Studios is making a sequel live-action series to Denis Villeneuve’s feature Blade Runner 2049. The new show is called Blade Runner 2099 and, unsurprisingly given the title, takes place 50 years after the events of Villeneuve’s film.
While Villeneuve isn’t directly involved in the new show, Ridley Scott, who directed the original Blade Runner in 1982, is executive producing. The project is still in its early days, but Amazon is reportedly fast-tracking the series because they know our world needs more dystopian stories about replicants.
According to Deadline, this latest Blade Runner project will be written by Silka Luisa, whose recent credits include penning Apple TV+’s Shining Girls, an upcoming crime drama starring Elisabeth Moss. The show also comes from producers Scott Free Productions (Raised By Wolves), Alcon Entertainment, and Amazon Studios.
Alcon, who also produces The Expanse and The Witcher series, gained film and television rights to the property in 2011. The show is their latest effort to capitalize on those rights, with other recent efforts including a deal with Striker Entertainment to create Blade Runner consumer products, because everyone needs to own the machine that runs the Voight-Kampff Test.
There’s no news yet on the details of what the show will be about, much less who will be cast in it, or when it will air on Prime Video. Given the popularity of the IP and the talent behind it, however, we’re sure to learn more details sooner rather than later.
